CF Policies for Infection Control Updated

The CF Foundation recommends those with CF clean their nebulizers after each use, maintain a 6 foot distance from others with CF or a cold and also instructs how and when to wash your hands and get vaccinated. Read more about the infection control update here.

Exciting News in CF Research

Vertex Pharmaceuticals has announced exciting findings from a multiple site clinical trial that BAPP participated in! This new drug under research "lumacaftor" combined with "Kalydeco" in those with 2 Cystic Fibrosis mutations ΔF508 showed improved lung function, BMI, fewer pulmonary exacerbations, and more. This is a very big step in CF research and hopefully can soon make a difference in the lives of more of our Cystic Fibrosis patients. Read more here.

URGENT: Forest Fires

Forest fires produce a lot of ash and soot. The particulate matter is harmful to the airways and it is important to avoid. The ash is covered in acids that burn the tissues they contact that is while your eyes sting and throat gets raw and airways respond with cough and wheeze. All patients with lung disease should avoid breathing it. Use an N95 mask to filter the air you breathe if you/your child has to go out into the out of doors, even the path to school and around town can be an issue. An N95 mask filters air of particulates and bacteria and some viruses. If you have a HEPA filter in your home be sure to turn it on and filter your air!

URGENT: Flu Vaccine

It is time for flu shots once again. This year the shot will again be killed, no live virus and will cover 4 important strains. Get your flu shot if you are 6 months or older and the whole family should do so. Remember that the flu mist vaccine is only for those 5-50 years old and it is a live vaccine. It may give you a mild case of the flu; you will have symptoms and will shed virus which can make you or your child sick. The Flu mist is not recommended for anyone with primary lung disease or the families of these persons.
