Biofeedback F.A.Q.
How is biofeedback helpful for patients with respiratory diseases? Use of biofeedback helps one learn how to breathe more efficiently. It can also help you relax. If you are short of breath, changing your respiratory pattern can make your breathing more comfortable. What happens if I come for biofeedback training? You will meet Ruby Ng. She will show you the biofeedback machinery and attach sensors to the skin. Sensors are small light-weight discs or wires that are taped to the skin. The first session you usually play games on a computer with a sensor attached to your forearm. Through the sensor tiny movements of the muscle of your forearm are transmitted through the computer and will allow you to control a computer game. This is a fun way for children and adults to see directly, through biofeedback, how to master a task you couldn’t have done before. Following this sensors are applied to the chest, abdomen and upper back. Your normal breathing is displayed on the computer and many fun graphics are used. As Ruby teaches you to use your diaphragm to breathe you can manipulate the images on the computer. Once you master relaxed breathing and can control the computer images you will be able to continue this breathing pattern even without the machine. Does it hurt? No. Biofeedback is pain free. How many times to I need to practice in order to learn? Everyone gains some control even in 1 session. But 4 sessions usually 1 weekly can help you master new breathing techniques. Are there certain diseases that benefit most from biofeedback? Common uses for biofeedback include: controlling tension headaches, changing body temperature for people who usually have cold hands and feet, improving bowel and bladder control and most importantly controlling breathing. Are there other advantages to learning relaxed breathing? Yes. The body’s normal response to stress, termed the flight or fight response, affects many parts of the body. Many adults and children complain of feeling stressed. Through biofeedback and relaxation skills you can turn down or turn off your stress response. This can significantly improve sleep and decrease chronic pain and improve internal body function. How do I learn more about biofeedback? Please contact our office or Ruby Ng directly. Do insurances cover biofeedback? Some do. Some don’t. Be sure to check with your benefits plan. If biofeedback is not specifically covered for respiratory problems often physical therapy is covered and can also be used to get the insurance company to pay.

Biofeedback
![]() Biofeedback refers to augmenting information about body processes usually thought to be automatic. If you could see the temperature of the skin you could learn how to raise the temperature or lower the temperature. Through biofeedback you could learn to change body temperature, blood flow to specific areas of the body (stop a headache), control muscles independently (Expanding just your right lung or controlling your anal sphincter to prevent soiling a diaper). |
