BAPP provides a broad range of diagnostic, treatment, research, and education services related to breathing or respiratory health problems in children from birth to age 21.
Diagnoses and/or Conditions Treated
- Evaluation of unexplained, persistent, or recurrent cough; exercise intolerance; pneumonia; dyspnea; wheezing; stridor; cyanosis and tachypnea.
- Evaluation and management of asthma; respiratory infections; bronchopulmonary dysplasia; cystic fibrosis; congenital anomalies of the chest wall or airways or lung parenchyma; pulmonary hypoplasia
- Evaluation of sleep-disordered breathing apnea and disordered control of ventilation (central hypoventilation syndromes); bronchiolitis obliterans; bronchiectasis; pulmonary fibrosis; recurrent aspiration syndromes; HIV-related disease; interstitial pneumonitis and fibrosis; chronic severe and/or progressive respiratory disease; progressive dyspnea; ARDS, pulmonary hypertension and chronic respiratory failure.
- Evaluation of allergic disease and immunodeficiencies.

Services
- Comprehensive care for cystic fibrosis with ancillary services by pediatric dieticians, social workers, respiratory therapists, and physical therapists.
- Comprehensive flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy program.
- Comprehensive pulmonary physiology laboratory with pulmonary
function testing, exercise stress testing, hypoxic challenge, altitude
simulation studies, infant pulmonary function testing, and
bronchoprovocation testing.
- Comprehensive sleep study laboratory with pediatric polysomnography.
- Management of patients requiring chronic respiratory support (long-term invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation, chronic oxygen therapy, tracheostomies).
Additional Programs
- Asthma education in the community: a variety of community outreach
programs, including visiting doctors in their offices to help them better
understand asthma, and classes for patients and families dealing with problems related to asthma.
- Home ventilator program
- Nationally certified cystic fibrosis program: certified for cystic fibrosis care nationally through the CF Foundation and at the state level through California Children’s Services (CSS). We work closely with the Adult Cystic Fibrosis Center at California Pacific Medical Center and lung transplant centers in the Bay Area. We are a site for multicenter research in CF.
- RSV prevention: annual clinic to facilitate monthly injections of the Synagis vaccine and other RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) preventive medications.
- Sleep Clinic for evaluation of any sleep-disordered breathing.
